Unbelievable that the UFC could leave huge money like this on the table, but they don’t want these two to fight and now GSP has retired
Two-division UFC champion Georges St-Pierre announced his retirement from mixed martial arts yesterday and went out on his own terms.
The 37-year-old says he wants to continue training for the rest of his life but has no desire to fight again following on from his victory over Britain’s Michael Bisping for the middleweight title back in November 2017.
However, he did want to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The Russian is still undefeated in MMA with a record of 27-0 and his latest victory was a comprehensive win over Conor McGregor.
The Eagle laid out a public offer to GSP the day before the Canadian announced his retirement.
St Pierre said the post from Khabib excited him and he appreciated it, but, ultimately, the UFC did not want to do it.
“My agent was talking to the UFC, we tried to organize the fight with Khabib,” St-Pierre said. “I know Khabib wants it and I want it, but the UFC had other plans. To the point where I am in my career, for me it’s more at this time taking one fight at a time instead of being there for several fights. The way the business works in UFC, if they promote someone they want to keep him there to have a guarantee that the guy is there. It’s like an investment.”
Georges St Pierre
There is almost no doubt that GSP will down as one of the very greatest fighters in UFC history and Khabib wanted to fight him out of respect, unlike the McGregor war.
It’s had to fathom why the UFC wouldn’t want to make such a lucrative fight and perhaps even bill it GS’s retirement bout, but there is some kind of logic in what Rush says, too.
If St Pierre wasn’t interested in signing on to do multiple fights, it makes little sense for UFC to spend so much money and time on him. That’s despite the fact he would have brought them a massive, massive payday by facing Khabib.
Never say never, but GSP’s time in the octagon appears done.
